Electronic Control Unit

ECM or engine control unit is a small electric unit working as the nervous system of engine. Electronic control module provides data output and split-second for vehicle’s functionality and safety. It monitors several components of vehicle such as emission control system and whole network of sensors. ECM control unit comes in different shapes and sizes depending on the brand and model of the vehicle’s engine. Mostly ECMs can be identified through number of connector pins to know which application it has.

Where ECM is located?

Electronic control module is always located at the cool side as engine is continuously producing large amount of heat making the temperature up to 200 degree Fahrenheit. Such a high temperature is not suitable for the ECM to function correctly. It can be found at the side of engine typically bolted using 4 mounting points. It is also connected to the harnesses with connectors. Experienced technician is always recommended for installation or removal of the Engine control module.

Programming of ECM

Programming of ECM is required to function it correctly with the engine. As every engine has specific requirements. It usually requires very expensive software to program the ECM which has a complete library of calibrating files for each engine. Correct programming is necessary for proper functionality & performance. Only company’s authorized dealers have access to the programming softwares or you can simply ask the seller to provide programming services when buying the replacement ECM.
